Should Police Officers Engage In High Speed Chases?

Weekend robbery at local jewelry store sparks debate if chases could cause more harm than good.

The swift apprehension of four men suspected of robbing Hartgers Jewelers of over $1 million in Rolex watches and other jewels on Saturday led to kudos for first responders from many Patch readers.

The suspected robbers were caught after a quick pursuit on Route 208 South by police officers from Wyckoff.  Assisting Police departments were Franklin Lakes, Hawthorne, Midland Park, Ridgewood, Mahwah, Allendale, Bergen County Sheriff’s, and Passaic County Sheriff’s.

But in the wake of the pursuit some readers have questioned if high speed chases are warranted if there's no immediate risk to life.
