Sports Recap: Lady Braves Fall, Ramapo Baseball Marches on

A look at the week's past sports action.

In baseball, Ramapo continued their run at a county title with a win over St. Joseph to advance to the semis.  In tennis, Jonathan Carcione completed his run at a county championship, winning his third straight BCT title for Ramapo.

TUESDAY
Tennis Raiders 4 – Wayne Hills 1
North 1, Group 3 State Sectional Quarterfinals
Sixth seeded Ramapo earned an upset win over third seeded Wayne Hills in the Group 3 quarterfinals of the state tournament.  Jonathan Carcione, Daniel Lee, and the teams of David Brooks & Jack Yang and Jeff Gitlin & Jake Kaplanall won in straight sets.  With the win, the Raiders will take on top seeded Montville on Thursday with a trip to the finals on the line.

Girls Lacrosse
Lady Braves 18 – Holy Angels 13
North Group 2 State Playoffs: Round 1
A game-high 7 goals from Nicole Kopyta helped propel Indian Hills past Holy Angels in the state tourney.  Natalie Carti netted a hat trick and both Katie Taranto and Molly Resto scored twice each while Katie Viducic’s 10 goals in net were enough to seal the win for the Braves.  IH advances to the second round where they will meet the three seed, West Essex.

Lady Raiders 15 – Pascack Valley 5
North Group 2 State Playoffs: Round 1
Ramapo knocked off the 7th seeded Indians in the first round of the state playoffs to live to play another day.  The Raiders got 4 goals apiece from Mackenzie Mosera and Taylor Van Calcar and Sam Poremba kept PV out of the net with 12 saves.  After jumping out to a big lead early the Raiders never looked back in a 10-goal win.  They'll look to keep the momentum going when they meet the number two seed, Summit, next round.

THURSDAY
Tennis
Montville 3 – Raiders 2
North 1, Group 3 Semifinals
Ramapo lost a close one as Montville advances to the state sectional championship.  Wins at first singles by Jonathan Carcione and first doubles David Brooks & Jack Yang were not enough as the Raiders lost by the slimmest of margins.

Bergen County Championships
Brad Paternostro won the Group B 1,600 meters, posting a 4:19.08.

Baseball
Raiders 11 – Wayne Hills 8
Chris Thompson smacked a homerun and drove in two and Chris Liquori drove in three as the Raiders earned the win.  Matt Osieja got the victory on the hill to give Ramapo some momentum heading into their Bergen County Tournament game against St. Joe’s on Saturday.

Girls Lax
West Essex 18 – Lady Braves 3
Katie Viducic turned away 15 shots, but West Essex kept the pressure on all game and was still able to net 18 goals.  On defense, West Essex completely shut down the vaunted Braves attack, holding them to just 2 goals from Nicole Kopyta and 1 goal from Natalie Carti.

SATURDAY
Softball
Lady Braves 1 – Paramus 0
It may have been an upset on paper, but the 5th seeded Braves were the returning county champs, and they proved why on Saturday.  Indian Hills took down the tourney’s top seed, Paramus, to make it back to the BCT championship for the second straight year.  The difference in the game was a two out single in the seventh by freshman shortstop Nicole Leocata.  After Nicole Paiotti doubled to lead off the inning, she was replaced by courtesy runner Meghan Burke who scored the winning run.  Ashley DeYoung pitched a 4-hit shutout with 5 K’s to earn the victory. Despite their best efforts in the finals.

Baseball
Raiders 4 – St. Joseph 0
TJ Hunt’s 8th win of the year (8-0) was a big one, shutting out St. Joe’s to help his team advance to the Bergen County semifinals.  Hunt struck out 4 and gave up just 4 hits as he out dueled Rob KaminskyJoe Scaglione tripled in the first run, Ryan Dougherty squeezed in the next, Chris Liquori homered for the third run, and Hunt doubled in the final run.

Tennis
Bergen County Tournament
Jonathan Carcione added to his trophy cabinet, as the senior won his third straight Bergen County Championship and his first and first singles.  Carcione would not be denied another title, dominating his four opponents and losing only six games in his four matches.
