Spring Sports Season Gets In Gear

Baseball, softball, lacrosse and more on the Spring schedule

Now that the snow has finally melted away and the clocks have sprung forward, the spring sports season in Wyckoff is within sight.  With just about a month until opening day, the recreation department has everything in place and will be ready to go by the end of the month.

“The fields are just about dried out and ready to go,” said Recreation Director Andy Wingfield.  “It’s an exciting time year; it’s getting warmer and the kids are ready to get out there,” he said.

This year, the rec department will offer the same programs as it has in past years with the addition of a girl’s lacrosse program.  In the past, girls have had to participate in the Franklin Lakes program, but growing interest encouraged Wingfield and the department to start their own program.

“We are very excited for our first year of girls lax,” said Wingfield.

The numbers show that the girls are excited too, with 130 players signed up for the inaugural season.

Other programs will include baseball, softball, T-ball and boys lacrosse.  As usual, baseball and softball have tremendous participation, totaling exactly 1,000 signups between the two.  Boys lax has gotten 270 signups to bring the total lax participation to 400 players.

In addition to the near 1,500 youth participating in rec leagues, teens from eighth grade through college will participate in the rec program as umpires.  “This gives residents the chance to continue to participate in the program even after their playing days are over,” Wingfield said.

The season will begin with the annual opening-day parade on April 16th followed by the start of games on April 20th.  The season will culminate on June 11th when teams will try to become part of Wyckoff Rec history when they compete for their league championship.
