Spring Sports Season Gets Underway in High Schools

Ramapo and Indian Hills kicked off the Spring sports season on Friday.

With the Spring sports season getting underway last Friday, you might have thought the forecast was an April Fools joke as snow and ice was predicted. The bad weather held off however, and a few teams began their 2011 seasons. Here's a wrap-up of the weekend action:

Raiders 12 - Fair Lawn 1 (in 5 innings)

  • The Raiders came out hot in the cold and rainy weather and put a hurting on the Cutters, mercying them in 5 innings.
  • Eight players registered RBI's for Mickey Hunt's squad, led by 3 by junior outfielder Alex Nickles and 2 by junior catcher Joe Scaglione.
  • TJ Hunt got the win, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 6 in 4 innings of work.
  • The Raiders entered the season ranked #20 in North Jersey.

Baseball

Braves 0 - Wayne Hills 7

  • The Braves were shutout on opening day by the Patriots.
  • IH entered the season ranked #6 in the North Jersey top 25.

Boys Lax

Braves 4 - Pascack Valley 5

  • Eric Heinowitz had 21 saves in the loss.
  • The Braves dropped their first two games on opening weekend, but look to bounce back against NV Old Tappan on Tuesday. That game will be streamed live on www.MSGvarsity.com at 4:30pm.

Girls Lax

Lady Braves 14 - Northern Highlands 9

  • The girls outscored the Highlanders 8-3 in the second half after battling to a 6-6 tie in the first.
  • Nicole Kopyta led the way with 6 goals and 1 assist.
  • Natalie Carti also had a nice game with 4 goals and an assist.
  • Katie Viducic recorded 10 saves to help IH win their first of the season.

Softball

Just like the Lady Raiders, the Lady Braves also attended spring training down in Florida at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World. The team finished 7-2-1 in 10 scrimmages against teams from seven different states. The team was able to make the trip thanks to tremendous fundraising efforts headed by fundraising chairpersons Jan and Albie DeYoung, raising over $19,000 for the trip!

Lady Braves 6 - Wayne Hills 7

  • The Lady Braves opened up their regular season with a tough 9-inning loss to the Patriots.
  • Ashley DeYoung clubbed two homeruns and drove in two in the loss.
  • Junior Morgan Levine also had a good day at the plate with 3 hits including a double.
  • IH entered the season ranked #3 in North Jersey.
