Township Addresses Realty Signage Concerns

Amended ordinance would give realtors some concessions, stops short of addressing directional signage concern

After hearing at an earlier committee meeting, Tuesday night Mayor Kevin Rooney announced the township would look at amending the current ordinance relating to placement of signage advertising homes for sale in town.

The proposed amendments will allow real estate signs on lots for sale to be a minimum of 10 feet from the street as opposed to the current 25 feet;  a for sale sign will be allowed to remain on the property up to seven days after the property's closing rather than seven days after the contract is signed as it now stands, and currently one for sale sign is allowed per lot, the amended ordinance would permit a second open house sign from one hour before to one hour after the open house concludes.

But the amended ordinance doesn't address the specific issue of directional signage that some local realtors told Patch was critical to steering out of town traffic to their open house events. Weichert Realtor Roseann Thompson said she was grateful the township committee was receptive to the realtors concerns, but is hopeful for additional concessions.

"It's a positive step and shows that (the township committee) is listening and discussing it, but putting signs closer to the street has never really been an issue," Thompson said. "We still have an issue with directional signs. That’s not been resolved and that's really what we need. I hope they’ll look at what other towns are doing and consider limited hours with those signs."
