Township Amends Signs Ordinance

Amendment aimed at easing some restrictions placed on local realtors promoting open houses.

The Wyckoff Township Committee introduced an ordinance Tuesday night to amend Chapter 186 of the Zoning code in an attempt to ease some restrictions placed on local realtors as it relates to open house signage.

The amended ordinance allows real estate signs on lots for sale to be a minimum of 10 feet from the street as opposed to the current 25 feet;  a for sale sign will be allowed to remain on the property up totwo days after the closing sale rather than seven days after reaching an agreement to sell seven days after the property's closing rather than seven days after the contract is signed, and currently one for sale sign is allowed per lot, the amended ordinance would also permit a second open house sign from one hour before to one hour after the open house concludes.

But the amended ordinance doesn't address the specific issue of directional signage that some local realtors told Patch was essential to steering out of town traffic to their open house events. Weichert Realtor Roseann Thompson told Patch earlier this month that while grateful the township committee was receptive to the realtors concerns, she was hopeful for additional concessions.

"We still have an issue with directional signs. That’s not been resolved and that's really what we need. I hope they’ll look at what other towns are doing and consider limited hours with those signs," she said.
