Wyckoff Committee Approves Special Needs Housing Concept Plan

House would be built on vacant lot in the business triangle. Up to 10 people could possibly live at the house, officials said.

The Wyckoff Township Committee approved the concept for a small special needs housing development to be built.

The development would be built on a long-vacant municipal lot in the business triangle, Committeeman Brian Scanlan said in a Facebook post.

Bergen County United Way, which has already constructed such housing projects throughout New Jersey, would pay for and build the development, Scanlan said.

“There is an urgent needs for such housing for adults with developmental disabilities, especially in Wyckoff,” Scanlan said in the post. “This construction is going to make a real difference for Wyckoff families.”

The Township Committee has taken several steps this year to help people with special needs.

Officials approved a resolution in May encouraging officials throughout Bergen County and New Jersey to designate portions of public land in county and state parks, colleges, or other government facilities so housing for special needs residents could be constructed more easily.

The Access for All Committee, which is charged with helping Wyckoff special needs residents and their families, was created in April.
