Wyckoff PTO Economy Shop Benefits Community for 64 years
The store opens for business September 15.
A coat of paint, new curtains and a new layout will welcome consignors and shoppers to the Wyckoff PTO Economy Shop when it opens its door for the 64th year on Thursday, September 15.
The Economy Shop is run by parent and community volunteers and benefits both the Wyckoff public schools as well as Ramapo and Indian Hills High Schools. Last year the schools received more than $40,000 from the Economy Shop. Each school must send volunteer representatives to work at the consignment shop in order to receive financial support from the shop’s revenue.
Danyel Competiello and Dianne Carolan will serve as co-presidents of the Wyckoff PTO Economy Shop for the 2011-2012 school year.

“Last year was my first year volunteering at the economy shop and when I heard they would close it if someone didn’t step forward, I knew I had to help,” said Competiello.
New to the shop will be an Econo List service. It will allow the community to list larger items in a book for a $5 per item fee. Photos and descriptions will remain in the Econo List book for six weeks and any transaction will take place between the seller and buyer.

“We had many people tell us they have furniture for sale or larger items and this will give them an opportunity to showcase their items in our book,” said Karen Arnone, vice president at the Economy Shop. “The Econo List will serve as an advertising service,” she added.
The Wyckoff Economy Shop is participating in the popular Lord & Taylor "Shop Smart Do Good" fundraising shopping event. The annual event, which benefits area non-profit organizations, is scheduled for October 6 at the Ridgewood Lord & Taylor. Discount coupons are available for $5 each at the Economy Shop, which is located in the old train station at 399 Main Street. The Economy Shop keeps 100 percent of coupon sales and can receive additional revenue based on attendance to the event.
Area residents who wish to seel items at the shop are required to open a consignor account, which cost $7 and allows for eight items to be consigned per week. Consignor accounts receive 60 percent of the sale price of their items sold and the shop receives 40 percent. Checks are distributed four times a year. Items not sold are donated to local charities.
“If you are not interested being a consignor, we will gladly accept your donated items,” said Competiello. Area businesses that have donated to the Economy Shop include Michael Felice Interiors and Something Special for Someone Special.
The Economy Shop is open when school is in session. The shop is closed on Mondays.
Shop hours are:
Tuesday 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.
Friday 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The shop is also open the first Saturday of the month; the kick-off Saturday is October 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Another fundraiser sponsored by the Economy Shop is the annual town wide garage sale. This event is scheduled for May 5, 2012. Additional information and registration will be available online later this year.
