Wyckoff Sets Age To Purchase Cigarettes At 21

Those 26 and younger must show identification when purchasing tobacco or nicotine. Smoking is also now banned in parks.

A new township law makes it illegal to sell tobacco or nicotine products to people younger than 21 and bans the use of such products in parks and recreational facilities.

The ordinance states that the township is “committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of its citizens.”

The new law prohibits people from selling, distributing, or giving tobacco or nicotine products to anyone 21 and younger. The products include: cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, and snuff.

Retailers selling such products must post signs at least six by eight inches notifying customers that proof of age is required to purchase them. Anyone 26 and younger must show identification when making a purchase.

Retail employees will not be allowed to sell the products until they have read the newly-enacted ordinance. Business owners or managers must sign a statement that the employees has read the ordinance and state laws.

The law bans smoking in parks and recreational facilities, including their parking lots and driveways. No-smoking signs will be posted at these locations.

First-time violators will be fined at least $250. Second- and third-time violators will be fined $500 and $1,000, respectively.
