Ukrainian pianist Tetiana Shafran, gold medalist at the 2019 Olga Kern International Piano Competition, brings sparkle and soul to Beethoven’s youthful and exuberant Piano Concerto No. 1. Ravel’s enchanting Mother Goose Suite invites us into a dreamlike world of fantasy while Stravinsky’s spirited Pulcinella Suite delivers humor, wit, and rhythmic brilliance to close the NMPhil Afternoon Classics season with flair and panache.

The NMPhil closes its monumental 15th Anniversary Season with an evening of profound emotional depth and musical brilliance, acclaimed violinist Karen Gomyo returns to perform Schumann’s rarely heard Violin Concerto, a deeply personal work rediscovered in the 20th century and celebrated for its lyrical beauty and introspective character. The program culminates in Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, a monumental journey from darkness to light. From its iconic funeral march to the transcendent Adagietto, the symphony unfolds as a sweeping and deeply moving orchestral experience. Music Director Roberto Minczuk conducts.

Join pioneering death educator and author Gail Rubin, CT, for a special evening marking the launch of her new book, 98.6 Mortality Movies to See Before You Die. This unique event pairs film and conversation to explore end-of-life issues in a meaningful, accessible way.
The evening will feature a screening of the 90-minute documentary “Other Side” (2025). The film follows Lynda Bluestein, a Connecticut woman with terminal cancer, who undertook a groundbreaking legal battle to access Vermont’s Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) law as a non-resident. She opened doors for others while navigating her own end-of-life journey. The film intimately shows one family’s experience with MAID, which is legal in New Mexico and 13 other jurisdictions.
Following the film, Gail Rubin and death educator Jane Westbrook with End of Life Options New Mexico will lead a discussion on Medical Aid in Dying in New Mexico, offering insights and answering questions.
Popcorn will be served! Copies of 98.6 Mortality Movies to See Before You Die
will be available for purchase, and Gail will be signing books after the program.
