City crews are prioritizing the worst damage, while officials explain why older platted areas lack paved roads and how residents can seek improvements through special assessment districts or report problems via Report Rio Rancho.

Bonkers for balloons (rrobserver.com subscription) — Maggie Cordova Elementary families in Rio Rancho kicked off Balloon Fiesta weekend with an early-morning Balloons Aloft event featuring the HF Sinclair hot air balloon, food trucks, and a school book fair. Students in pajamas sipped hot chocolate while parents and school board members enjoyed a less-crowded way to see balloons and take in one of Rio Rancho’s best mountain views.

Pumpkin patch season kicks off after 'hot summer' challenges (koat.com) — Families in Rio Rancho can head to Galloping Goat Pumpkin Patch, now open for the season with a strong pumpkin supply despite this summer’s heat and water restrictions. Along with McCall’s in Moriarty, the patch relied on well water to keep crops healthy and is keeping prices steady while offering refreshed attractions for fall outings.
   

4. La Cueva football beats Rio Rancho behind Chris Lopez (abqjournal.com subscription) — Rio Rancho High School’s football team fell 28-7 to La Cueva at Wilson Stadium, ending a strong offensive run and raising concerns after injuries to quarterback Micah Takahashi and receiver Gilly Terrazas. Coaches say Takahashi’s knee looks structurally sound, but Terrazas’ dislocated elbow could sideline him until the postseason, forcing younger Rams players into bigger roles.
