Albany County says Central Warehouse demolition getting closer (wnyt.com) — Albany County says the long-blighted Central Warehouse on Montgomery Street is nearly ready for demolition, with more than 4,000 tons of debris already removed. Officials, including County Executive Dan McCoy, say only final permits from Amtrak stand between residents and the long-promised teardown.
   

2. Patent data shows growth in photonics, quantum computing in Capital Region (timesunion.com) — Albany's NanoTech campus is at the center of a surge in semiconductor, photonics, and quantum computing patents, with IBM and Tokyo Electron leading local innovation. A new study shows this research boom is driving high-paying photonics engineering jobs across the Capital Region, including openings in Albany and Malta tied to AI-focused next-generation chips.
   

3. Albany County Kratom ban officially in effect September 1 (news10.com) — Albany County's new kratom ban takes effect September 1, pulling the drug from smoke shops and other retailers across Albany. Health officials cite overdoses and one related death, while local shop workers worry about black markets and call for tighter regulation instead of an outright ban.
   

4. Three juveniles arrested in flare gun incidents in Albany (newportdispatch.com) — Albany police have charged three 14-year-olds in a series of flare gun incidents that damaged a CDTA bus, endangered passengers, and were linked to a robbery in several city neighborhoods. All reported incidents resulted in no injuries, but the juveniles now face arson, weapons, and robbery-related charges in Albany County Family Court and through probation.
   

5. Counties urge Hochul to act on federal SNAP cost shift (spectrumlocalnews.com) — Albany County could face a multimillion-dollar hit to its budget as SNAP administration costs shift heavily onto counties, potentially forcing tax hikes or use of reserves. County Executive Dan McCoy and other leaders are pressing Gov. Kathy Hochul to cover the new expenses and looming error-rate penalties, warning that local property tax caps and services are at risk.
