#85: Be a Beach Steward
Get some fresh air, bond as a family, and help take care of our world-class beaches and you can start this weekend.

It's not enough to just say you love our enviable shoreline and natural coastline beauty. If you consider yourself a Babylon beach lover, show your appreciation for our natural resources by joining in one of many organized beach cleanups to ensure that the white sands and precious dune habitats stay lovely for another year.
There are several organized events on the South Shore during the late summer and fall. An upcoming cleanup sponsored by State Senator Owen Johnson is scheduled for this Saturday, September 17th from 10 a.m. until noon at Robert Moses State Park, Field 2. A rain date is slated for the next day, Sunday the 18th. Bring the kids and encourage them to compete to see who can find the most discarded bottles and plastic bags.
But if you can't make this weekend's planned event, keep an ear out for other organizations hosting similar efforts. The Long Island chapter of the Surfrider Foundation posts announcements and updates on area clean-ups on their website, as does local nonprofit Save the Beaches, which also heads up an annual beach grass planting.
