Babylon Business Damaged In Blaze Opens New Location

South Shore Paddleboards, one of the businesses damaged in a massive fire last month, opened the new South Shore Paddleboard Shack.

BABYLON VILLAGE, NY - A Babylon Village business seriously damaged in the massive Main Street fire last month recently opened a new location.

South Shore Paddleboards, which was originally located on 258 E. Main Street, was shut down after the blaze on April 19.

The fire reported began at Empire Nutrition on 260 E. Main Street and spread across the strip of stores along Main Street, including the Sherwin-Williams paint store. The fire destroyed two of the businesses.

While the flames didn't reach South Shore Paddleboards, the business suffered from severe smoke and water damage and had to close down.

However, owner Karen Vaccaro Marvin didn't let that get her down. On May 11, she announced that she decided to open the South Shore Paddleboard Shack at the Long Island Yacht Club on 307 Little East Neck Road.

Marvin has used the yacht club for paddleboard lessons and rentals in the past, but will now be using the location to sell her paddleboards as well.

"We'll have lots to showcase in the shack... it's small... it's simple... it's going to be great," Marvin wrote in a post on Facebook.

After the fire, local resident Mike Karwoski started a page on GoFundMe to raise money for Marvin and her business.

"[Karen] woke up this morning to a disaster when hearing the news the adjoining building to her business was on fire which caused severe smoke and water damage to her store," Karwoski wrote on the page. "Karen along with her family live for the outdoors. Karen puts her full heart and soul into her paddle board business so much that it recently was named Long Islands #1 Paddle board shop."

The fundraiser is now closed, but managed to raise $2,455.
