However, the day of your test you must also pass an eye exam, provide 6 points of identification including a social security card, and pay all fees to take the exam.
  2. Practice driving. The DMV states that you must have 50 hours behind the wheel of a car while being supervised by a parent or guardian before you can schedule a road test.
  3. Take the 5 hour pre-licensing course. In New York the 5 hour pre-licensing course is mandatory for those wanting to take a road test. A certificate must be provided to the driving instructor the day of your road test. It is a very informative class with useful knowledge that will come in handy on the road.
