GILGO BEACH, NY - Suffolk Police officer Craig Capobianco may have been off duty when surfing at Gilgo Beach last weekend, but that didn't stop him from springing into action when he saw a fellow surfer got hurt.

That day Huntington resident Mia Imbesi, 24, was surfing nearby when she took a nose-dive into a wave.

When she came back up, she looked pale and she told Capobianco she was hurt and needed help.

He found that Imbesi had suffered a deep cut on her right leg that was bleeding profusely so he put her on her surfboard and started moving towards the shore.

When Capobianco got close enough to shore, he carried her to the beach where several good Samaritans immediately helped out and put pressure on her leg to stop the bleeding.

Imbesi was then transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where she received 54 stitches.
