Governor Offers Thoughts about Columbus Day

Governor Cuomo says, 'As we celebrate the Italian-American community, we also salute all communities of new Americans as each has provided its own thread, helping us to weave the beautiful and diverse tapestry that is New York.'

As people of Italian-American descent celebrate Columbus Day, Governor Andrew Cuomo released a message to mark the holiday:

"Each year in New York, we come together to observe Columbus Day: A celebration of the proud immigrant tradition that's strengthened our state and our nation for generations. We also commemorate the Italian-American community, whose traditions have thrived in New York from the first waves of Italian immigration until this day.

"Since 1929, New York City’s annual Columbus Day Parade has marked this occasion. Today it's the world's largest celebration of Italian-American heritage. But as we celebrate the Italian-American community, we also salute all communities of new Americans as each has provided its own thread, helping us to weave the beautiful and diverse tapestry that is New York.

"As an Italian-American who watched his own four grandparents - all immigrants - work hard and thrive in this country, I feel tremendous pride in celebrating this day. Please join me in paying tribute to the countless men and women whose perseverance, work ethic and commitment helped make the United States the great nation that it is today."
