LIRR to Enforce No-Smoking on Platforms Starting Today

The grace period is officially over and violators face fines and possible jail time.

Smokers who commute on the LIRR beware: The MTA is now enforcing the no-smoking rule on outdoor platforms and ticketing areas at terminals and stations.

Violators could be ejected off the LIRR property, face a fine of up to $50 or even 30 days in jail.

The MTA says that up until today violators have been issued warnings, but the grace period ends today. Metro-North and the LIRR have been conducting a customer education campaign to raise awareness of the new smoking ban, an effort that has included leafleting on trains, signage at stations, customer email alerts, postings on Facebook and Twitter as well as public address announcements.
