Scientists Flourish at Babylon Elementary
First-grade students took an up-close look at hermit crabs in the school's new science lab.

Exploratory scientific learning is starting early at Babylon Elementary School as students are engaging in inquiry based, hands-on projects within the building’s new science lab.
The space, which was previously occupied by a class, was transformed this winter with the guidance of first-grade teacher Bernadette Forthmuller and the PTA. While open to all grade levels, the first-grade teachers are collaborating regularly to plan experiments tied to enhance classroom curriculum and challenge students to build upon their critical thinking skills.
Recent projects had students explore properties of matter and observe and research hermit crabs. Experiments often integrate technology and afford the students the opportunity to use the lab’s Google Chromebooks.
