Trustee Vanderveldt Resigns from Babylon Village Board

Alice Vanderveldt, who has served as a member of the Babylon Village Board of Trustees for over 17 years, announced her resignation at a board meeting on November 14th.

Vanderveldt, a member of the Better Babylon party, has served multiple roles in village government since her first days in office in 1995 with then-Mayor E. Donald Conroy.

"[She] devoted her time and patience to the parks department," said Mayor Ralph Scordino after he read Vanderveldt's resignation letter aloud. "She is responsible for all the beautiful flowers you see around the village and in front of village hall."

He added: "We'll deeply miss her and thank her for all of her hardwork."

Valnderveldt noted in her letter she had been planning on resigning for some time and had discussed it in a meeting with the mayor and Deputy Mayor Kevin Muldowney on September 11th. She cited personal reasons for her departure. She was serving the end of her four-year term after being last elected in 2009.

"Today is definately a special day," Vanderveldt said to those in attendance. "It's a difficult time to let go, but I'm going on my terms."

The mother of four said she was grateful for the journey and said it was a tremendous pleasure to serve the village. She was given an ovation by the residents and board following her short statement.

"I'm really going to miss being a part of the team," she said. "This experience has been rewarding."

Vanderveldt's departure is effective as of November 14th, 2012; she offered to be available during the transition period. The board will search for a replacement in the meantime.

Village elections, including for Vanderveldt's position on the board, will be up for election this March.
