Bayside Historical Society

The Bayside Historical Society is honored to welcome back Donna Gentle Spirit Barron, family historian and genealogist for the Matinecock Tribal Nation and published author of five books on her family’s Native history. The Matinecock were part of the Algonquin Nation and one of the thirteen original Native American tribes of Long Island. Donna has previously hosted American Indian crafting workshops and author talks at The Castle, provided research material for BHS exhibits, and helped establish the 2015 historic co-naming at Northern Boulevard and Marathon Parkway in Little Neck. On May 14, Donna will sit down with Paul DiBenedetto, BHS Vice President of Buildings, for an engaging conversation about her family's nine generations living in Little Neck and the Matinecock settlements in Bayside and northeast Queens. Join us to learn about the Native American communities who lived here in the past — and who are still here today.

Join the Bayside Historical Society for a hands-on Gravestone Preservation Workshop at the historic Lawrence Cemetery. Led by expert conservator John Griffin of Griffin Gravestone Conservation, this immersive experience will teach participants how to safely and respectfully clean historic gravestones using approved methods and materials.
Through guided instruction and hands-on practice, attendees will gain a practical understanding of preservation techniques, proper care standards, and the importance of protecting these irreplaceable cultural resources for future generations.
The workshop concludes with a Q&amp;A session at noon, with the option to stay until 2:00 PM for additional hands-on cleaning, deeper discussion, and continued learning.
Location:&nbsp;The Lawrence Cemetery in Bayside, at the corner of 216th Street and 42nd Avenue. Please note: the site requires walking on uneven ground, and there are no restrooms available.

The Tuesday Morning Music Club of Douglaston will present a free concert of classical music, the last of the 2025-2026 season, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at 11:00 AM.&nbsp;&nbsp; The concert will feature performances by performing members as well as a guest artist, Susan Sobelewski: Jeong-Hwa Park and Ms. Sobelewski, pianists, will perform music of Schubert.&nbsp; Ronald Meixsell, bass-baritone, and Julie Ann Meixsell, soprano, will perform music by a variety of composers in genres including classical, opera, and operetta, accompanied by Aglaia Messina, pianist.

The concert will take place at the Community Church of Douglaston, 39-50 Douglaston Parkway, Douglaston, NY.&nbsp; Admission is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

Port Promenade Returns to Main Street This Summer 
Port Washington’s popular summer street festival, Port Promenade, returns to Main Street for two Thursday evenings this summer — June 18 and July 16, 2026 — from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. each night. On June 18, Main Street will be closed from Library Drive to Central Drive. On July 16, the event will move to Upper Main Street, with closures from Port Washington Boulevard to Mackey Avenue. The car-free, family-friendly event will feature live music, outdoor dining, shopping, and activities for all ages. As part of our 250th anniversary commemoration of the United States, the Bayside Historical Society presents historian Char Weigel in a compelling live talk exploring the complex and controversial life of Benedict Arnold’s wife, Peggy Shippen.
Margaret Arnold, perhaps better known by her childhood name Peggy Shippen, has been portrayed through history as either a total innocent or the scheming mastermind behind Benedict Arnold’s treason. Based entirely on primary sources, Char Weigel brings to life this complex and nuanced woman. The true story of her involvement is more fascinating than the fiction as is the path that her life took after the discovery of her husband’s plot and his defection. Weigel also discusses the spies, double agents and secret correspondence involved in Arnold’s communications with the British.
About the Performer: Char Weigel is a historian who frequently publishes and presents new research on Benedict Arnold’s treason and Revolutionary War history in the lower Hudson Valley. She is Vice President of Special Projects for Revolutionary Westchester 250 and on the board of the Friends of the Odell Rochambeau Museum.
