BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — A brazen thief who stalked a Bed-Stuy home was caught on surveillance footage clawing through the front gate to steal a package Monday night.

A Macon Street resident who asked not to be named shared surveillance footage with Patch that shows the package thief's approach around 6:45 p.m. Monday night.

“He came by twice to make this effort,” the woman said, “and scarily spent a lot of time standing in my front courtyard plotting how to steal this package."

The woman discovered the footage around 8:30 p.m. when her tenant asked about a missing package.

It shows the thief using a mop handle to claw at the missing package, which had been left behind a locked gate of the home between Throop Avenue and Marcus Garvey Boulevard less than two hours earlier.

The thief can be seen first checking that the house is empty, then returning with a mop which he uses to jimmy the package toward him.

The woman said she will pass the footage to her tenant to file a police report.

Package theft is long standing problem in Bed-Stuy, where residents have reported stolen a dead woman’s ashes and Saks dresses, among other items.

Several residents who rely on the Brevoort Station Post Office said they are in a constant battle against package theft because postal workers leave unattended deliveries without ringing their bells.
