CROSS RIVER, NY — The incredible talents of two local musicians won't be a secret for much longer. Soon, everyone will know what the John Jay High School community has know for some time.

Senior violinist David Bond and junior trumpet player William Fenton have been accepted into the prestigious New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Area All-State Festival, John Jay High School’s Performing Arts Department has announced.

The invitation is based on the students’ high scores in NYSSMA, a solo festival in which music students can be evaluated each spring.

"Hundreds of students across the county participate in NYSSMA and only the best of the best are selected for Area All-State," Elissa Leventhal, conductor of the John Jay High School Orchestra said.

Both students are long-time musicians. Bond began playing at age 5 and Fenton at age 10. Both were members of Increase Miller Elementary School’s music ensembles, followed by music ensembles at John Jay Middle School.

"I see myself playing violin in college," said Bond. "It’s a life skill that I’ll always treasure."

He highlighted the immeasurable benefits of Leventhal’s support in his path towards mastering his instrument and explained that his peers have had similar positive experiences in the program.

Fenton said that playing the trumpet will always be part of his life, describing it as a great way to express himself. He called Jared Henderson, conductor of John Jay High School’s Band, a great teacher.

The conductor had congratulatory comments for the students, as well.

"Congratulations, Will. I am so proud of your hard work and dedication to the trumpet and band program," said Henderson. "You are an outstanding musician and really deserve this opportunity."

The sentiments were shared by Leventhal

"We are so proud of you, David," said Leventhal. "Congratulations on this major accomplishment which has taken years of dedication to your craft to achieve. You are a wonderful representation of the KLSD music department."

The Area All-State Festival takes place on Saturday, November 5, at 2 p.m. at White Plains High School.
