John Jay Wrestling Press Release
Thanks to John Jay wrestling coach Bill Swertfager for the below submission:
Event Date: 12/9-12/10…Patriot Tourney
Summary-
The John Jay Indians took their varsity team, as yet not fully tested, to the Patriot Tournament, and shocked most of the crowd, when they landed 2 in the conci-finals and 5 in the finals walking away with 3 Champions.
In what is supposed to be a re-building year, Jay came away with a 4th place finish out of 12 and has a new confidence that hopefully will carry this team into and through the post season.
Alex Lambiotte (132), Mike Rosenthal (195) and Ethan Smith (220) were crowned champions. Graham Bocklet (138) and Billy Gossett (182) finished in 2nd, Declan Myers (170) took home a third place and Louis Talia (285) secured a 4th. Freshman Ari Fay and Brian Kershner came in 5th and 6th respectfully.
Coach's comments-
If you had told me Friday morning that we were going to place 9 kids in this tournament, I would have told you were crazy. I don’t know what we are doing in our room, but whatever it is we will continue much of the same.
Alex Lambiotte wrestled better than I have ever seen him B4. His aggression, which we have been preaching to him, was the key to his success this weekend. He has been run through the gauntlet the past 2 seasons and now it is his chance to shine. I am very happy for him.
Ethan Smith literally came out of nowhere to pin every one of his opponents including a finals that saw him hoist up a wrestler much bigger then he, then gently lowered him to his back for a first period pin.
The confidence that this kid exudes in his ability is really refreshing and it is paying big dividends for him on the mat. Mike Rosenthal, broke his opponent in the 2nd period of the finals, when he was disqualified by being called for stalling for a 4th time. Mike was relentless on top and smothered him.
The official came over to me after the match and said he hasn’t hasd to do that in 30 years of officiating. Good for you Rosey. Declan wrestled in on of the toughest weight classes in the tourney and beat some very good opposition…he was 5-1 on the weekend.
Louis Talia back for the first time on the mats. Wrestled extreamly well to get into the 3rd/4th place round. In that match he was leading and tried to ice the match with a throw, but came up short. I told him that is exactly what I would have tried and I give him a lot of credit for going for it. That is exactly what we are looking for the whole team to be doing….take some risks and have some fun.
Our JV wrestled at the Greeley Varsity Tournament on saturday and got a lot of great experience that will serve them well I the coming weeks
