Harvey weekly sports wrap
Thanks to the Harvey athletic department for the below submission:
V boys’ bball
The Harvey Boys’ Basketball Team lost to Chase Wednesday, December 14, 60-51. Led by a strong defensive effort Chase took an early lead at Harvey’s home court. The visitors went up by as many as twenty points before Harvey mounted a comeback in the second half.
The Cavaliers were able to cut the lead to eight but could not get any closer. Harvey was led by freshman guard Ricky Hicks who scored a game high 17 points. Senior Aaron McBurnie and Julien Higgs, a junior, chipped in with 13 points apiece.
JV boys’ bball
On Wednesday (12/14) Harvey's JV Boys’ Basketball team lost to Chase Collegiate by a score of 55-44. Chase led 26-22 at half-time, but the Cavaliers could not mount enough offense to overcome Chase in the second half.
The leading scorer for Harvey was Jake Berkson with 10 points, followed by Jackson Roberts (9), Harry Solomon (6), Tom Smith (6), Jabhari Taylor (5), and—with 2 points each—Jake Piekarski, Sam Mackiewicz, Josh Gantt, and Brad Rothschild.
V girls’ bball
On Wednesday (12/14) Harvey’s girls’ varsity basketball team defeated Chase Collegiate 34-26 in league play. The girls’ team has a 4-1 record going into the break.
JV girls’ bball
On Tuesday (12/13) the Harvey School’s girls’ jv basketball team remained undefeated by pulling out a win against host Soundview Prep 30-29. In the final minute, the Cavs secured the win by breaking the Soundview full court press as Sammi Aloi found Sami Panoff alone under the basket for an easy lay-up.
Eight different players scored for Harvey, led by Sami Panoff (8) and Alexis Palmer, Shelley Pitterson, Vanessa Mackiewicz and Natasha Stein, all with 4 points. Alexis also pulled down 8 rebounds. Emily Pollack hit her first 3-pointer of the season, Sammi Aloi scored 2, and Fiona Magliari sank her first free throw of the year.
V hockey
On Wednesday (12/14), The Harvey School's varsity ice hockey team hosted FAA hockey league rivals Hamden Hall. Mike Morra, assisted by fellow seniors Tim Ehlberg and Ricky Schulman, opened up the scoring for Harvey on the power play.
Richard Schulman put Harvey up 2-0 with under two minutes left in the first. In the second period, Harvey played a good mix of conservative and aggressive hockey after letting up a goal in the first minute. Last year against Hamden Hall, Harvey twice blew 3-1 leads to lose 6-3, and they were determined to not let that happen again.
Four different Harvey players stepped up and responded with a goal: Corey Eisenband, Robert Van Raamsdonk, Tim Ehlberg, Ricky Schulman, and Mike Morra. The third period featured a contribution by Brett Marks, second goals by Corey Eisenband and Mike Morra, and Schulman's third of the game. Robbie Massimi stopped 15 of 17 shots for Harvey.
Harvey JV ice-hockey starts season
Thanks to the Harvey ice-hockey supporter who sent in this submission:
The Harvey JV Hockey Team traveled to the Brunswick School yesterday (12/14) to kick off the 2011-12 season and, unfortunately, lost 5-2 to the more experienced Bruins.
Harvey started the game flat, which was to be expected with seven new players on this year's squad, and quickly fell behind. By the end of the first period Harvey trailed 5 - 0 and had been badly outplayed.
Between periods, Coach Delaney calmly reminded the team about setting and achieving small goals, remembering the drills worked on in practice and stressed team play. His words clearly resonated because when the game resumed it belonged to the Cavs.
Slowly, steadily the boys began putting words to action and played like a team. The Cavs outworked and outsmarted Brunswick all period led by veteran Sophomores Rory Knox, Myles Greenwald and the inspired play of Rookie Senior Will Schubert and Freshmen Turner Eifert and Dylan Stanton.
Incredibly, Harvey began to dominate the game in the third period and had the Brunswick team scrambling. Freshman Tommy Gattuso played a great game defensively and added numerous opportunities to score even hitting the post early in the third and Junior Pat Taylor and sophomore Charlie Seider seemed to be everywhere at once out-hustling and fore-checking the frustrated Bruins.
The Cavs finally got on the board on the power-play on a rebound goal scored by Pat Taylor assisted by Sophomore Kieran O' Conner and young veteran Charlie Seider. Harvey scored again a few minutes later on a spectacular individual effort by Kieran O' Conner. Kieran blocked a shot and then raced down the ice with the puck and an opponent draped over his back and scored unassisted on a blistering far post shot.
The game ended shortly after but what clearly started as a demoralizing defeat turned into a stirring moral victory.
Special mention to the defensive quartet led by Kieran O' Conner, and Freshmen Tommy Gattuso, Joe Sorrentino and Marc Catanese. They were sharp and steady from beginning to end and their influence clearly helped the inexperienced forwards.
In nets, Freshman Marcus Plummer was sharp (and had to be) making 30 saves total and keeping the Cavs in the game in the first period.
Overall, a terrific first game to build on.
