BEDFORD, NY — The Bedford Playhouse recently announced the hiring of its first executive director. Nicole Gardner joins the Playhouse from her prior position as director of development for the American Theatre Wing, which founded and co-produces the Tony Awards.

Gardner has nearly 20 years of experience working for nonprofit organizations, including the Park Avenue Armory and the Center for Arts Education.

The Playhouse’s search committee reviewed more than 100 applications, according to a spokeswoman.

Board Chairwoman Sarah Long said that Gardner joined the organization at a crucial juncture.

“Over the summer, our small group of dedicated staff and volunteers have been handling a very complicated and diverse programming calendar in the main theater while still managing major construction in the rest of the facility,” she said.

“Nicole is now in place preparing for our opening and strategizing about our future,” Long said. “She has patience and vision, and our staff and board are excited.”

The Playhouse is working to complete its final phase of construction in time for its Sept. 28-30 grand opening celebration.

Gardner said she was delighted and honored to become the Playhouse’s executive director.

“This role allows me to continue my work building cultural organizations while also pursuing my passion for bringing communities together and igniting minds through the arts,” she said.
