Can't File Taxes on Time? You Can File for Extension
Here are some tips on how you can buy yourself more time to file your taxes.

So you woke up this morning and thought, “Oh no, my taxes are due soon, and I haven’t started working on them.”
Well, maybe it’s not that extreme, but just maybe you aren’t in a position to completely finish your tax returns, even though—in New York—they don’t have to be filed until April 18.
Well, the Internal Revenue Service said you can receive an automatic extension to file your returns, but keep in mind taxes are still due by April 18 in New York.

“An extension of time to file in not an extension to pay,” the IRS said in a press release. “Taxes are still due by the original due date.”
To file for an extension, get Form 4868 by clicking here.
If you file for an extension, the next deadline for filing your 2015 returns is Oct. 17, 2016. Taxes can be filed any time before the extension expires.
Complete instructions on how to file electronically, including any outstanding tax payments, or with a paper form are included on Form 4868.
The IRS said no explanation is necessary about why you are asking for an extension. You will only be contacted if your request is denied.
