The Boys JV Basketball team went through some growing pains in the beginning of their season when they dropped seven of their first eight games, but hard work and a solid team effort helped turn their season around. The JV, coached by Tim Cornell and Rod Owens, went 7-5 in the second half of their season to finish up 8-12 overall.

The highlights of the JV season were their three highest scoring games. The first one was a 57-41 defeat of The Wooster School. Coach Cornell said, “In the Wooster game, everything seemed to click, and the players started to trust the offense and our press. We had not scored more than 44 points all season, so this was a great effort.”
Coach Cornell said two late-season victories over Soundview were the other high points of the season for the JV.
“We had lost two very close games to them in December, but when we met them in February, and early March we played two fantastic games, showing how much we had improved,” Coach Cornell said. In the first match up, Harvey beat Soundview 61-44, and then when they beat them 70-26 in their final meeting, it was the highest scoring game of the year for the Cavaliers.
Team Co-Captain Andrew Schwartz led the JV in both scoring (8.5 ppg) and blocked shots. Coach Cornell said, “Andrew was also a great defensive presence in the lane and provided leadership on and off the court.” The second leading scorer, Austin Forman (7.3ppg), did not join the team until January. Coach Cornell credits the newcomer with helping to turn the season around. “Austin was that extra player, much like Jeremy Lin, that made the rest of the team better when he joined us,” said Coach Cornell.
The fourth-year JV coach said this year’s team “grew and improved the most from the beginning of the season to the end.” He said his players showed a lot of character. “They did not get down on each other during the poor start of the season, but continued to work hard in practice and improved a lot.” He added, “For a coach, that is all you can ask for from your players.”
Girls JV Basketball Season Has Its Thrills
The girls JV basketball team finished the season at 6-6. The girls, coached by Tim Stark and Karen Baciagalupi, provided their fans with some thrills along the way.
Coach Stark said, “We started this season with a bang with three straight wins and ended with a bang on a last-second shot by Sophie Sirkman to defeat Soundview, 22-21.”
Of the team’s six wins, three came over Oakwood Friends and three were victories over Soundview Prep, including two that came on last second baskets, one by Sami Panoff and the other by Sirkman.
Harvey JV Hockey Team Shows Grit
Harvey’s JV hockey team, coached by Rob Griffin and Kyle Delaney, finished the season with four wins and five losses.
Coach Griffin said a home game against Birch Wathen Lenox School provided one of the great highlights of the season as the Cavaliers held on for a 3-2 victory. Harvey controlled the game from beginning to end but the victory would not be an easy one. BWL fought every step of the way and made the Cavaliers earn it.
Harvey jumped out to a 1 - 0 lead on a goal by freshman Tommy Gattuso assisted by sophomore Myles Greenwald. After BWL tied the game, Harvey jumped ahead 3 - 1 on goals from eighth-grader Theo Rattner and junior Pat Taylor with assists from Gattuso, fellow freshman Joe Sorrentino, sophomore Kieran O' Conner, and senior Will Schubert.
The third goal was a work of art as the forward line of Taylor, Schubert, and sophomore Charlie Seider, with assists from defensemen Sorrentino and Gattuso, kept BWL bottled up in their own zone for almost two full minutes before scoring the winning goal. BWL scored late in the second period to cut the lead to one but Harvey played great defense in the third period for the victory. Freshman goaltender Marcus Plummer continued his stellar play with 26 saves, performing at his best in the last minutes of the game as BWL pressed hard for the tying goal.
For the season, Theo Rattner led the team in goals with 10. He also was tops in total points with 17. Gattuso, Taylor, and Rory Knox had five goals apiece. Freshman Keith Lambert and sophomore Curtis Rattner were tied for third on the team with four goals each. Seider led his team in assists with eight.
