John Jay Crushes Fox Lane 14-2 in Baseball

Indians hand Foxes their first loss this season.

Four runs in the first inning led John Jay to a 14-2 rout of rival Fox Lane in a baseball game at Fox Lane Tuesday. It was Fox Lane's first loss of the season after seven straight victories. John Jay is 8-2.

Strong pitching carried the Foxes during their great start to the season but proved to be an issue throughout the game.

"It was just one of those days," Fox Lane coach Matt Hillis said.

Hillis said that John Jay was "too good of a team" to have errors like the Foxes had and come out with a win.

In order to return the Foxes to their winning ways, Hillis said he planned to have a tough practice and then start Zach Marine on Thursday when Fox Lane hosts Byram Hills.

Naturally, John Jay coach Geoff Curtis had an altogether different take on the game.

"I'm very pleased with the outcome," Curtis said.

He also said that he thought his team was strong at the plate, on the mound, and in the field despite some defensive miscues early on.

Tyler Curry's home run in the top of the first inning highlighted a four-run outburst that put John Jay up for good.

"The first inning set the tone," Curtis said.

Fox Lane scored two runs in the bottom of the first to pull within 4-2, but never got any closer.

John Jay added to its lead in the top of the third when it scored four more runs. Mark Swertfager's home run was the key hit in the inning.

In the fourth, John Bigel and Jared Hirschberg – who also pitched a stellar game for John Jay – came home on an error.

Fox Lane had to use five pitchers throughout the day in Brandon Serio, Chris Nast, Matt Manjuck, Andrew Rosenbaum, and Will Kucharczyk; John Jay used two. Hirschberg had a strong start and John Cooley came on in relief and didn't allow a run.
