John Jay Defeats Greeley 9-5 in Boys Lacrosse

Seven different players scored for the Indians.

It was a close 9-5 victory for the John Jay Indians boys lacrosse team over the Horace Greeley Quakers under the lights Friday night at SUNY Purchase.

Horace Greeley first led 1-0, but John Jay quickly turned it around and took the lead on Evan Chen's goal with 6:47 left in the first to go ahead 2-1.

John Jay solidified control of the game when it went ahead 6-2 before a hard-fought Quaker comeback cut the lead to 6-4 in a third quarter. But John Jay scored the next two goals to go up 8-4 and effectively end the game.

The Quakers put up one more fight, with Dan Leventhal making a goal with under ten minutes left to narrow the Indians' lead to 8-5, before John Jay's Brendan Morris answered with a goal to make it 9-5.

Missed opportunities proved troublesome for the Quakers against a team that takes advantage of its opponent's miscues.

"They are an excellent team and they capitalize on your mistakes," Horace Greeley coach Vin DeGregorio said.

Greeley's Nate Becker was back in action from a shoulder injury for the Quakers and led them with three goals. Leventhal scored two.

Morris and Forrest Walter each had two goals to lead the Indians. Morris also contributed two assists. Chen, Mike Daniello, Jake Weil, Jimmy Morris and Mike Lupinacci each scored one goal, with Daniello also recording an assist.

Fletcher Franklin had six saves in goal for the Indians, with Robert Maher saving five.

Gabe Weissmann tallied 12 saves for the Quakers and displayed tremendous leadership throughout the night.

Greeley's next game is at home against Byram Hills on Tuesday, while John Jay also plays Byram Hills next Thursday on the road.
