John Jay Indians Fall to Horace Greeley Baseball Friday
Home runs from John Salamone and Sam Gladstone lead Horace Greeley Quakers over John Jay Indians.
Nine runs in the first inning led the Horace Greeley Quakers to a 14-6 victory over the John Jay Indians Friday.
John Salamone's grand slam in the first ran in Andres Larramendi, Jesse Zweibon and Steve Haynes for a 5-0 lead.
Richie Giner's run made it 6-0 before Sam Gladstone hit the Quakers second home run of the day to go up 9-0, scoring Steve Ippolito and Michael Guillaro.
With such a large lead, Head Coach Anthony Marino did not want the Quakers to settle for whatever runs they could throughout the game's duration, especially against the rival Indians, who scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to trail 9-3 on a home run that brought in Mark Swertfager, Stephen Green, and Dean Lambert.
"It was great to jump out to that lead but we never overlooked the amount of runs," said Marino.
Scores from Zweibon, Guillaro and Ippolito increased the Quaker lead to 12-3 before the Indians pulled to within 13-6. It did not make much of a difference, however, as the Quakers tallied one more run for the eventual 14-6 final.
"It really was a gritty game despite the score," Marino said.
John Jay Assisant Coach Joe Gaudio fulfilled head coaching responsibilities in place of regular Head Coach Geoff Curtis, who was out for personal reasons.
"They just made a lot of good plays," said Gaudio, whose team could never recover from the Quakers' nine runs early on. "It's tough to come back after the nine runs," he said.
The Indians stayed positive despite the large deficit and the loss. "The kids took it in stride," Gaudio said. "It was just one of those days," he said.
Stephen Green struckout two and walked three in one, and a third innings pitched for the Indians. John Bigel also struckout two and walked one in four and two thirds innings. John Cooley had two strikeouts walking one in one inning pitched.
Horace Greeley pitcher Michael Levine tallied six strikeouts in seven innings.
Horace Greeley next hosts Ossining on Saturday at 2 p.m., while John Jay hosts Rye Neck on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in its next important game.
