John Jay Indians Topple Rye Garnets

The John Jay Indians beat the Rye Garnets 22-20 Monday.

Rye won ground balls and worked as a team to create ball movement and take shots on goal.

"Our attack tried really hard to get open," said Rye Girls lacrosse  player Molly O'Brien.

The Garnets held a 2-0 lead on goals from O'Brien to eventually stay ahead, 11-10 on an Emma Tucci goal with one second left before the half.

In the second half, the Indians came out with a vengeance on a Mallory Grimm goal less than sixteen seconds in, to take a 12-11 lead.

Down four at 16-12, the Garnets tried to re-focus themselves and take control of the game, but John Jay maintained their lead before Rye made a final push struggling to tie it and regain control again.

 "It was back and forth," O'Brien said.

The Indians scored 22 goals and remained scoreless the rest of the game, allowing the Garnets to continue their comeback.

John Jay Head Coach Gale Lozado called a timeout after an O'Brien goal at 4:36 made it 22-18.

It was at this point that the Garnets felt encouraged as the game was not over just yet.

"We still have time," Zweigenhaft told her team.

The Indians controlled the ball, however, holding on for the 22-20 win.

A Lozado defensive adjustment took the pressure off of a double-teamed Bocklet, allowing her to score the majority of the goals for the Indians.

Bocklet led the Indians with eight goals to go along with four assists, with the Garnets' O'Brien scoring all of hers unassisted.

"It was a nicely played game," Lozado said, despite four of seven yellow cards being called against her team in a game she thought was not very physical. Rye had three.

Maddie Kinker tallied 11 saves on goal for Rye. Veronica Brady had 12 for John Jay.

Rye next hosts Horace Greeley on Wednesday while John Jay hosts Fox Lane.
