Katonah Resident Wins Nikon Photo Contest

Nikon photo contest winner supports research for the prevention and treatment of concussions.

A Katonah resident and 2014 graduate of SUNY Purchase has won the 2015 Nikon I am Generation Next image contest. Daniel Newman’s evocative photograph of his brother, who has suffered numerous concussions over years of playing sports was chosen. Over 14,000 applications were submitted on social media and after the judges selected three finalists it was left to the viewers to select the winner.

Daniel entered the contest to put a face to concussion and to raise awareness as to its potential long-term effects. Most people don’t realize that although concussions might begin on the field of play, the effects don’t always end there. Many who have sustained these injuries have lingering symptoms such as persistent migraine headaches, as well as memory and balance disturbances. Unfortunately there are no specific treatments for these post-concussion symptoms and significantly more research is needed. Daniel is hoping that his photograph and the story behind it will raise awareness and ultimately lead to more research for prevention and treatment of concussion.

The American Migraine Foundation has launched the “36 million dollar campaign” a grass roots effort to raise funds for this research. If you are one of the 36 million Americans with migraine or know someone who is you can go to americanmigrainefoundation.org for more information.
