Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor Course Empowers Youth and Adults

This past weekend marked a significant milestone for a group of 12 scouts from Westchester and Duchess counties as they successfully completed the Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor course. The training focused on equipping participants with the knowledge and skills needed to educate others about minimizing their impact on the environment while enjoying outdoor activities.

The course brought together scouts and adults from across Scouts BSA Greater Hudson Valley Council, reflecting a commitment to fostering a culture of responsible outdoor recreation across different age groups. Throughout the training, participants engaged in hands-on activities (e.g. building mound and pan fires, setting up bear bags), discussions, and practical scenarios to deepen their understanding of the 7 (seven) Leave No Trace principles: Plan Ahead and Prepare, Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces, Dispose of Waste Properly, Leave What You Find, Minimize Campfire Impact, Respect Wildlife, and Be Considerate of Other Visitors.

They tackled real-world scenarios, discussed best practices, and honed their skills in teaching others how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly. The youth scouts not only learned to be responsible stewards of the environment but also gained valuable leadership skills that they can carry into their scouting adventures and beyond. The adult scouters, in turn, enhanced their ability to guide and mentor the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.

The impact of this course extends beyond the weekend, as these newly certified Leave No Trace Instructors will serve as ambassadors for responsible outdoor ethics within their scouting units and communities. Their knowledge and commitment to Leave No Trace principles will contribute to fostering a greater sense of environmental stewardship among their peers.
