Look for the Northern Lights Tonight, Tomorrow

A big solar flare may make the Aurora Borealis visible tonight this far south.

One of the most amazing shows the universe can provide is usually a treat only for those who are in the earth’s northernmost or southernmost latitudes.

But the geomagnetic storm from two huge solar flares on Tuesday and Wednesday should finish traveling the 93 million miles between the sun and the Earth tonight. And that means an unusually large Aurora Borealis.

“Friday night, under mostly clear skies, the Hudson Valley may be in for a rare treat… as a solar flare will give us a chance at seeing the Aurora Borealis,” the Hudson Valley Weather folks said on their website. “Auroras are very difficult to predict, and the timing is crucial, but we have one of the best chances for viewing in recent history. So after dark, you may want to look to the northern sky, and see if we’re lucky enough to witness the rare event.”
