NYC Considering Banning Chocolate Milk From Schools [POLL]

Some say cutting out sugar would be good, but others say the calcium is more important. Should school kids have a chocolate milk option?

Got milk? Well, in New York City, public school students may only have white milk to drink if the city's Department of Education proceeds with a proposal to ban chocolate milk from school menus.

The NYC DOE said getting rid of the flavored milk option would eliminate some sugar from students' diets, Fox News reported.

The NYC school system is required to offer two milk options, according to its website, but it actually offers three: low-fat white, non-fat white and non-fat chocolate milks.

A registered dietician with NYU Lagone Hospital, Norma Reid-Archibald, told NBC News 4 in Los Angeles, that getting rid of the chocolate milk option is not a good idea because students need the calcium.

She said the chocolate milk only has 30 more calories and eight more grams of sugar than the white milk being served.

Some parents aren't thrilled about the prospect of having chocolate milk removed from the school meal menu.

Rochester First reported that the parents said children will opt for juice or soda over white milk, eliminating what could be the only calcium source for them.
