The Security of Your Home and Your Privacy are Paramount

Here are a few ways you can protect your home while it's on the market...

Last week while I was out previewing new listings and I noticed that many agents were still using the old fashioned lockboxes on front doors that simply require a pushbutton code to open and access the key. Once the code has been distributed, almost anyone can get into the house without the homeowners’ knowledge. Because the security of your home and your privacy are top priorities of the Mark Boyland Team, for many years we have been using electronic lockboxes that record who has been accessing the home. All of this made me consider what else we can do to help you secure your home during a listing. Here are a few ways you can protect your home while it’s on the market:

Hide your valuables: Don’t keep high-value items visible in your home, especially jewelry, collectibles and other items that can be easily stolen. Put your valuables away or in a home safe.

Protect Your Information: Other items to secure out of sight are your personal papers, bank statements, anything that includes your Social Security number and account numbers, blank checks, and prescription medications.

Fix problem areas: If someone gets hurt on your property, they can hold you liable. Before you open your home to potential buyers, make sure you:

  • Repair loose and uneven flooring, especially on porches and decks.
  • Remove ice and snow from walkways and steps.
  • Secure rugs with non-slip padding.
  • Keep hallways and stairwells clear of clutter.
  • Make sure your home is well lit inside and out.
  • Check with your insurance company to make sure that you are properly covered.

Secure Your Dog: If you are a dog owner, you should consider removing your pet from your home during showings. This will not only make your home more appealing to non-animal lovers, but it also eliminates the threat of dog bites or stress to your pet. If you can’t remove your dog from the house, consider a dog crate as another option.
