Votes for Women at the Lewisboro Library November 12

On Sunday, November 12 at 4 pm, Professor Susan Goodier will present “Votes for Women: Examining the Woman Suffrage and Anti-Suffrage Movements through Political Cartoons.” Political cartoons have been used since the 18th century to illustrate contentious issues, and they are still commonly used in publications and online media today. This multimedia program is a PowerPoint compilation of suffrage and anti-suffrage cartoons drawn from a wide range of archives and published sources. The audience is invited to analyze the cartoons, which are juxtaposed so that people can see anti-suffrage responses to suffrage contentions, and vice versa.

The presentation hopes to show how understanding the value of the vote to the suffragists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries should lead to more respect for the vote today. This program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities’ Public Scholars program. Refreshments made from actual suffragist fund-raising cookbooks will be served courtesy of Peter Rose.

Professor Goodier teaches courses in Women’s History, New York State history, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and Progressivism at SUNY Oneonta.
