Business Profile: Music Emporium

Music Emporium has been a well-known staple of the Bellmores and its surrounding communities for many years, servicing the needs of even the most discerning musicians.

Music Emporium has had its roots in Bellmore for over 30 years, with owner Charlie Lovarco and his brother starting the business fresh out of high school in 1979.

“We were into music, of course, and we just got involved in teaching first, giving lessons,” he said. “The lessons grew into the retail portion of it. We just started carrying merchandise, and it just grew from there.“

Soon, Lovarco and his brother moved their small Bellmore-based business several blocks west to their current location at 2641 Jerusalem Avenue, and from there they proceeded to grow into their current form.

“We’re a full-line music store,” he said. “We carry all musical instruments...guitars, keyboards, drums, PA gear, amplifiers, sheet music, plus all band instruments for kids who take band in school. Plus, we carry accessories for all the instruments.”

However, owning an instrument isn’t that exciting if you don’t know how to play it, Lovarco says that his establishment can help out customers in that respect as well.

“We have a full teaching facility,” he said. “We have private instruction on all of the instruments. We teach vocals, piano, drums, all band instruments...really, everything you can think of.”

Lovarco is quick to point out that to aspiring rock gods that it’s a long climb to the top if you want to rock and roll; you’ve got to master the basics first.

“Learning an instrument depends on what level you’re at,” he added. “At the beginner’s level, there are some basic things that you have to learn first, and then when you’re a more experienced player and you want to venture off into certain other areas, like jazz or blues or rock, we can really tailor lessons to what you’re looking for.”

Lovarco said that Music Emporium is an active part of the Bellmores, and always tries to give back whenever they can.

“Bellmore is great for us...I live in Bellmore also,” Lavarco said. “We’re part of the community, we’re involved in many of the school programs and events, giving donations. Being part of the community is great.”

The ability to create music is one of the most satisfying of life’s accomplishments, Lovarco said, and it’s never too late to pick up an instrument and start learning.

“People should know that music is great, even if you’re getting involved in it as a young child or an older age,” he said. “There’s no better time to start playing a music instrument than right now.”
