Bronxville Chess Team Earns 2nd Place In National Competition

BRONXVILLE, NY — Members of the Bronxville Chess team earned second place in the Under-1900 division at the 2018 National High School Chess Championships, held in Columbus, Ohio, in late April. To date, this has been the team’s best performance at a national event.

The students, who demonstrated outstanding mental endurance and strategic planning over the course of the competition, competed against more than 1,500 top players from 42 states around the country, according to a district spokesman.

“Bronxville’s success at the national championships was truly a team effort,” said Sunil Weeramantry, team coach and executive director of the National Scholastic Chess Foundation. “Several players opted to compete in a higher section and were willing to sacrifice their individual interests to support their schoolmates. It bodes well for the future of Bronxville chess.”

Members of the Under-1900 team include Bronxville High School junior Jack Kochansky, sophomore Conner Stoltz, freshmen Nicholas Bianco and Calvin Golimbu and Bronxville Middle School eighth-graders Alexander Kupersmith and Tyler Tanaka-Wong. Additionally, Tanaka-Wong placed seventh in the individual category in the Under-1900 division. Meanwhile, freshman Liam Angelone and eighth-grader Edmond Hannigan competed in the Under-1600 division, according to a spokesman.
