Joan Cowen Bowman will read from and discuss her family memoir, The Power of the Place. Though the author was born in 1932, her family memoir begins in 1869 with the birth of her grandfather in New York City, one of 14 children and a self-made millionaire by 1900. She spends her childhood at The Place, his magical estate on the North Jersey Shore – a bastion of both privilege and emotional deprivation. Her personal essays are published in the Vineyard Gazette on Martha’s Vineyard Island where she spends every July.
