PJS Jazz Society presents a jazz concert with the Winard Harper Quintet.
Jazz concerts are held every second Sunday of each month at First Presbyterian Church, Sept. through April.
The cabaret style concert will begin with an opening set by a group of young musicians from 5:15-6 p.m. Two sets by the headlining group will start at 6:15 p.m. through 9 pm.
"Drummer Winard Harper was inspired by jazz greats such as Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Jackie McLean, Cannonball Adderley, Dr. Billy Taylor and Billy Higgins—not just drummers, because to Harper “the drums are a melody instrument.” Harper’s first major gig was with Dexter Gordon in 1982, and shortly thereafter with Johnny Griffin, and then Betty Carter, with whom he spent four years. He has led his own group for over a decade, combining straight-ahead jazz and African influences and instruments like the balafon, the West African equivalent of the marimba."
