Memoir Writing Courses at Sarah Lawrence College Have Seats Available

Courses will be conducted on Saturdays, starting on March 26 , 2016, at The Writing Institute.

As of March 22, 2016, the Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville has seats available for two Saturday courses pertaining to memoir writing to begin on March 26, 2016. The instructor for both courses is Sarah Saffian, author of the memoir Ithaca.

“Get Over Yourself? Memoir Made Universal” (five sessions) will run from March 26 to April 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. The fee is $400. Saffian said, “The goals of this course are to take creative risks, to write precisely and originally in order to make our stories come alive on the page—even just one page—and, as ever, to get over ourselves.”

“So What’s Your (Life) Story? Memoir in a Nutshell” is a two-class program to be held on Saturday, March 26 and Saturday, April 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fee is $240.

This course focuses on a specific element critical to writing of the memoir. Saffian comments,“What’s that inciting incident, organizing principle, heat-seeking moment, which could drive your memoir?”

"We’ll write our 'life stories' in 500 words," Saffian said, "to see what rises to the surface as crucial to include allowing the narrower story to start to take shape. During the second class, we’ll share our pieces and workshop them on the spot."
