Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. A compactor chute fire in a downtown apartment building injured 19 people on Saturday night. Just after 11 p.m. flames started at the Farragut Houses on Bridge Street in Downtown Brooklyn. A dozen of the 19 who were hurt are in critical condition, while the rest, including a firefighter, sustained minor injuries. According to FDNY, the fire started inside a compactor chute on the third floor.
2. Police are looking for two women who may be responsible for pushing a 38-year-old woman onto the tracks at a Brooklyn subway station. The victim was walking down the stairs of the Rockaway Avenue station around 3:30 a.m. Saturday with the two women being sought by investigators, according to the NYPD. As they waited for the C train, an argument between the women escalated and ended with the two female suspects pushing the victim onto the tracks, according to police. A bystander helped the victim back onto the platform. The 38-year-old sustained minor injuries and was sent to the hospital overnight. Descriptions of the two female suspects have not yet been given.
3. Amid scandal, Nets' Kyrie Irving manages to donate 60k to NYC's oldest Black Muslim school and others. Just recently, the star point guard returned to the court after an 8-game suspension due to social media statements and press behavior that was deemed antisemitic. According to Hamza Abdul-Mumit, a former student at the elementary/middle school to which Irving donated $60,000, the Nets player just "pulled up" and "dropped a 60K bag." Irving has also made some recent contributions to other fundraisers, including an unannounced $65,000 donation to the family of Shanquella Robinson and $50,000 to the family of Devin Chandler, one of the three University of Virginia men's college football players who were shot and killed earlier this month.
4. The holidays officially began in Park Slope this weekend when the neighborhood lit their official holiday tree on Saturday night. This year, the tree lighting gave a special nod to small Brooklyn businesses—it was Small Business Saturday after all. Park Slope's business improvement district organized the event to help promote small businesses. Even Santa was there at the 4th Street Plaza on the corner of 5th Avenue to take photo with the neighborhood's children.
