🌱 Boerum Hill Shooting + Prosthetic Patrons + One Angry Bishop

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Hi all, happy Monday. Today you'll find news about these stories and more...

  • Boerum Hill shooting causes domino-effect catastrophe
  • Disassembling limbs for a cause. . .prosthetics, of course
  • Bejeweled pastor sues radio station after 'drug dealer' allegation

But first, today's weather:

🌤 Mostly sunny. High: 48 Low: 34.

Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. A corner in Boerum Hill descended into chaos after a gunman shot two people. Just before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, a gunman shot two men, a 26 and 23-year-old, critically injuring the latter. The shooter opened fire on the corner of Bond Street and Warren Street in Boerum Hill, injuring a BMW driver who ran a red light at Dean Street and T-boned an Acura in the intersection being driven by a man with his wife and child on board. According to a witness, the passenger told the BMW driver that he had to keep driving—the wounded driver complied until finally pulling over on Hoyt Street where paramedics found him and took him away in a stretcher. At this time, it's unclear if the wounded men saw what car the gunman drove off in.

2. New affordable housing building is the largest multifamily development to adhere to the Passive House guidelines for energy efficiency. Built as part of the East New York Neighborhood plan, Chestnut Commons is a mixed-use development project that pairs ground-level retail space with 13 floors of affordable housing. The building is one of only a few multifamily housing projects to adhere to Passive House guidelines, a European-born energy-efficiency standard that combines advanced technology for ventilation, insulation, and airtightness with design solutions that help retain heat in the winter and keep it out in the summer. And while Passive House is importantly climate conscious, it's also an approach that can keep apartments free of noise and air pollution.

3. Lending a hand: Across the U.S. Hundreds of thousands of functional prosthetics end up in the trash, but a NYC nonprofit is working to put these limbs to good use. Over the weekend, volunteers gathered in Brooklyn for a prosthetic limb disassembly workshop in order to ready thousands of limb components to be donated to amputees around the world. On average, amputees in the U.S. change their prosthetics every three to five years, but due to strict regulations in this country their old limbs often can't be donated and reused. However, of the some 60 to 100 million amputees around the world, about 90% of them can't access or afford care. Organizations like this NYC nonprofit are working to make prosthetic limb components available to amputees in over 20 countries—disassembly, pairing, and eventually shipping equipment across the globe.

4. Bling Bishop Lamor Whitehead is suing hip hop radio station for calling him a "drug dealer" on air. Whitehead, known to many as the iced-out Brooklyn pastor who was robbed of his jewelry mid-sermon on live television, is suing 94.7 The Block after the station's morning host Miss Jones marred his reputation. Jones accused Whitehead of being a "drug dealer" who's "using the church to hide that old drug money." She even went so far as to say that Whitehead's church "is where he's probably still doing his dirty work." The bishop has filed a $50 million lawsuit against The Block, claiming that the allegations are false and have disgraced and ruined his reputation as a pastor.

The day will also feature the work of a local New York artist, Edward Ubiera, painting a beautiful mural on the side of the urgent care center as a community art installation. The goal? • A celebrity homecoming in East New York: Jimmy Smits, starring in 'NYPD Blue' said, "The section of Brooklyn where the show is supposed to take place is pretty much where I spent my wonder years. We moved around a lot, but once we got back from Puerto Rico, I went to junior high school and high school there, and my first years in college were in Brooklyn College. My love of the arts and theater … really the seeds were all planted in that neighborhood." Read more at the link. (Parade Magazine)
