Brooklyn Feds Detain A New York Man Accused Of Supporting ISIS

"Fortunately his evil plan to wage jihad was thwarted," United States Attorney Breon Peace said.

BROOKLYN, NY — A criminal complaint filed in Brooklyn federal court on Wednesday has charged a New York man with attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State group ISIS, the Court of the Eastern District of New York said.

Syed Aman, 28, was arrested by the FBI at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday as he tried to board a flight to Qatar, where he would ultimately travel to Syria to join ISIS, the court documents said.

Aman is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo, officials said.

In the court's complaint, Aman was accused of donating money to a man he believed to be part of ISIS and being vocal about his support for ISIS through social media and in an online ISIS group forum from 2023 to 2024.

The court's complaint also accuses him of telling a secret FBI agent that traveling to ISIS-controlled territory and waging war on ISIS’s behalf was “the most important thing, more than anything else at the moment."

“As alleged, Aman was steadfast in his attempts to travel to the Middle East to join ISIS and fortunately his evil plan to wage jihad was thwarted,” United States Attorney Breon Peace said.

Peace has ordered Aman, who lives on Long Island, to be held without bail.

"The evidence against him is overwhelming," Peace wrote in his detention request.
