Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Amid the housing cries, a handful of progressive NYC politicians are making a 180 on Big Real Estate. It has long been the norm for state reps and council members to unite under a shared scorn for big-time real estate developers; politicians have routinely squashed projects in an effort to fight corporate greed, gentrification acceleration, or rising rent prices in their districts. However, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said recently that she would support local officials who welcomed new housing opportunities. Tiffany Cabán, a democratic socialist councilwoman from Queens, voted in favor of a project that would bring 1,300 new units to an open truck lot in her area—she said it would be "irresponsible" to squander a housing opportunity amid the city's housing crisis.

2. Transcend is a burial company helping folks stay green in the ground. Brooklyn-based founder and CEO Matthew Kochmann started the company earlier this month. The aptly named Transcend is planting people (and pets) as trees when they die—a means, he says, to reforestation. Kochmann is signing people up for $100 founding memberships, a price-point that includes a discounted total of $8,500 at zero interest for 35 years and your choice of tree species and placement. Transcend also will plant 100 trees with partner One Tree Planted and 1,000 more when your time comes. And did I mention the extra perk? You also secure 20% percent off a tree burial kit for pets and a T-shirt. Talk about a bargain.
3. Queens girl wonders if cops are allowed to ram folks from behind after her younger sister was killed in a crash caused by a speeding state trooper. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed earlier this year after a young girl named Monica Goods was killed when a state trooper crashed into the back of her father's SUV. Before Monica's 12-year-old sister Tristina Goods was interrogated by a state police detective for hours without a parent present, she asked if police were allowed to hit cars from behind like that. The girls' mother is actively pursuing murder charges against the state trooper who allegedly rammed into the SUV in which her 11-year-old daughter Monica was the passenger.

- The weekend might be over, but that doesn't mean Monday has to be all bad. What better reason to get out of the house after work than to check out these dive bars, officially rated the 10 best in NYC. (TheTravel)
- A Brooklyn condominium is reinventing the common outdoor space: the landscaping team for SO-IL at 450 Warren "chopped up the outdoor amenities, betting that smaller, more carefully shaped and planted terraces would be more popular than a large undifferentiated expanse of grass. The building's plan reads as three towers connected by curvy concrete walkways." Read more at the link. (Bloomberg)
