Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. NYC street gangs are living large in luxury apartments made possible by identity theft. Now, the woman whose been renting out these units is being prosecuted for provided these high-end crash pads and gun stashes. Now on trial in federal court in Brooklyn, Manhattan woman Latoya Williams has been under investigation ever since her phone number was found on the phone of a man shot dead in Queens last year. Now, prosecutors say that Williams used stolen identities and forged documents to rent the apartments, leaving the victims of the identity theft on the hook for underpaid rent, past-due balances and other fees.

2. The Justice Department shells out $100 million to reduce recidivism and support the previously convicted with re-entry into their communities after a period of confinement. The grant is one step in a large journey to building stronger, safer communities by supporting young people and adults coming out of juvenile facilities and prisons. Office of Justice Programs’ (OJP) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Director Karhlton F. Moore made the announcement during an event in Brooklyn. He was joined by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams for the Southern District of New York and U.S. Attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York.
3. Brooklyn Democratic Party Chairman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn has officially won re-election for a second term. As of polling results last week, the result didn't chalk up to be much of a surprise. However, whether or not Hermelyn can improve upon her first term — riddled with scandal and accusation — is another story. Vice Chair Henry Butler was also chosen again as district manager for Brooklyn Community Board 3. 47th AD District Leader Nancy Tong was chosen to serve as secretary, and Arleny Alvarado-McCalla will again lead the county committee.
4. Brooklyn's second largest parade of the year will be this weekend, Oct. 8. On Saturday, the largest gathering of Panamanians outside of the Republic will gather and march for the pride, culture, and Independence Day of the more than 210,000 Panamanian immigrants currently residing in the U.S. — 35,000 of which are allegedly living in New York City. The parade's size is rivaled only by the West Indian American Day Association’s multi-national, end of summer spectacle through Crown Heights and Park Slope. Smells of empanadas, tamales, carimanoals, sancocho, rosca bread, and foods that distinguish the uniqueness of the “bridge of the world” will fill the streets, while women and men march in colorful, traditional garb. Brooklyn's diversity will be on full, celebratory display this Saturday.
