After skipping the fare at a subway station, the man threatened police officers with a knife.

BROOKLYN, NY — Derrell Mickles, who was shot by police after skipping the fare at the L train subway station on Sutter Avenue, has received criminal charges from the police, New York City Police Department officials told Patch.
The charges include first-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, and theft of service for not paying the subway fare, an NYPD official said.
After skipping the fare at a subway station, police officers followed Mickles up three flights of stairs, until Mickles threatened police officers with a knife, saying "I'm going to kill you if you don't stop following me," according to NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.
