Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Brooklyn Nets' Kyrie Irving gives up millions to remain unvaccinated against COVID-19. Yesterday, the NBA guard told the media that he sacrificed a 4-year, $100 million-plus extension during the 2020-2021 seasons because he refused to get vaccinated. Up against what was deemed an "ultimatum," Irving expressed feelings of job insecurity due to his vaccination status — he had to miss a number of home games in Brooklyn last season due to New York City's vaccination mandates. Nets General Manager Sean Marks disagreed that Irving was up against any sort of ultimatum, stating, rather, that the city's mandate (not the Nets' organization) is what looms large in discussion about the player's future.
2. Today, families of the incarcerated in New York are rallying for the right to send food to their loved ones. One of the protests is set to take place outside of Gov. Kathy Hochul's office in Downtown Manhattan, calling for an immediate redaction of the policy that prohibits family members from sending certain types of food to their loved ones behind bars in state prisons. This rule, knowns as the DOCCS package plan, was changed earlier this year to forbid homecooked meals being send to inmates; instead, only items from third-party vendors that are pre-approved by the state. The rule also limits nonperishable packages to just two per year.
3. Morehouse Men make the 14-hour trek to visit Brooklyn's Excellence Boys. The dramatically inspired students from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, drove 14 hours to visit the 8th grade students at Excellence Boys in Brooklyn. Fifty men from Morehouse gifted the younger students with theatrical performances, moving monologues, and other artistic interpretations in order to teach and inspire over 600 8th graders about the core pillars and beliefs that lead to their success. Assemblymember Stefani Zinerman of Assembly District 56 in New York was on hand to thank the college students for visiting Brooklyn and for being an "inspiration today and always."
4. An accident lawyer gives a rundown on the labor laws applicable in Brooklyn construction accident cases. The news is often riddled with tragic reports of construction worker injuries and deaths in dense metropolitan areas; Brooklyn construction accident lawyer Samantha Kucher released a new article explaining the labor laws that surround this sort of cases. Here are some key takeaways:
- Determining responsibility for these sorts of accidents is often quite difficult, but while workers' compensation benefits may not cover the extent on an on-site injury, sometimes the worker can sue their employer for personal injury.
- Outlining workers' rights, Kucher mentions: "Construction companies and property owners must adhere to the New York Labor Law. They must ensure that construction workers have a safe place to work at all times. You can sue for damages if your employer violates any code section."
- The lawyers notes that according to a recent study, some 66 percent of construction sites in New York City have violations. However, it is difficult to prove negligence in a construction setting, and Kucher strongly urges victims to seek legal counsel for the best shot at getting the compensation they deserve.
